Decitabine is in a class of medications called hypomethylation agents, which help the bone marrow produce normal blood cells and kill abnormal cells in the bone marrow. It is given to help increase blood cell counts, reduce the risk of infection, reduce the amount of blood transfusions needed, decrease the risk of bleeding, and to prevent MDS from transforming to acute leukemia. Decitabine kills abnormal cells in the bone marrow by inhibiting a process called DNA methylation, which is essential for cell reproduction.
