Sevelamer is a phosphate binder that helps prevent hypocalcemia (low calcium levels) caused by elevated phosphorus. It is primarily used to control phosphorus levels in individuals with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing dialysis. By reducing phosphorus absorption, Sevelamer helps maintain a better mineral balance in the body.
Sevelamer is commonly used to lower phosphorus levels in the blood if you have a condition called chronic kidney disease (CKD) and you need dialysis. In CKD, your kidneys can’t remove phosphorus as well as usual, so high levels of phosphorus can build up in the body. This can lead to problems, such as making the bones weaker.
